What is Construction Dewatering?
Construction dewatering is the process of removing or controlling groundwater, surface water, and accumulated precipitation from a construction site or excavation to allow work to proceed safely and efficiently.
Any time you dig below the water table — which happens on the majority of commercial construction projects — water will find its way into your excavation. Dewatering keeps the work area dry, stable, and safe.
Why Dewatering Matters
Water on a construction site isn't just an inconvenience. Uncontrolled water causes:
- Unstable excavation walls — saturated soil loses its load bearing capacity and becomes a collapse risk
- Concrete and foundation problems — water contamination during concrete pours compromises structural integrity

Methods of Construction Dewatering
There are several approaches to construction dewatering depending on the scale of the project and the volume of water involved.
Pumping — the most common method for most commercial construction projects. Pumps are placed in the excavation or in sumps around the perimeter and run continuously to remove water as fast as it enters. Submersible pumps and trash pumps are the primary equipment used.
Wellpoint systems — a series of small diameter wells installed around the excavation perimeter, connected to a header pipe and vacuum pump. Used for larger excavations with significant groundwater inflow.
Deep wells — large diameter wells drilled around the excavation perimeter with submersible pumps installed in each well. Used for very deep excavations or high volume groundwater situations.
Sump pumping — a sump pit is dug at the lowest point of the excavation and a pump removes water as it accumulates. The simplest and most cost effective approach for smaller excavations.
For most commercial construction projects sump pumping with submersible or trash pumps handles the dewatering requirement effectively.
Choosing the Right Dewatering Equipment
The right equipment depends on your specific site conditions. Key factors include:
- Water volume — how much water needs to be removed and how fast it accumulates
- Water type — clean groundwater, muddy water with sediment, or water with construction debris
- Site depth — how far below grade you're working
- Project duration — temporary dewatering for a short excavation versus continuous dewatering for a long term project
- Power availability — electric power on site or need for diesel equipment
For most commercial construction dewatering a properly sized trash pump handles the job effectively. For continuous long term dewatering of deeper excavations submersible pumps are the preferred choice.
Dewatering Discharge Requirements
Where the water goes matters as much as how you remove it. Dewatering discharge is regulated in most jurisdictions and you need to be aware of:
- Sediment and turbidity limits — discharge water often needs to be filtered or settled before discharge to storm drains or waterways
- Discharge permits — many municipalities require permits for construction dewatering discharge
- Environmental compliance — discharge near wetlands, streams, or other sensitive areas requires extra attention
