What is a Lift Station and How Does it Work?

What is a Lift Station?
A lift station — also called a pump station — is a facility in a wastewater collection system that moves sewage from a lower elevation to a higher elevation. Since gravity sewer systems rely on a downhill slope to move wastewater, there are situations where the terrain makes a gravity flow impossible. A lift station solves this problem by pumping the sewage uphill to continue its journey to the treatment plant.
Lift stations are found in virtually every municipal wastewater system in the country. They range from small residential stations serving a few hundred homes to massive municipal facilities handling millions of gallons per day.
How Does a Lift Station Work?
The basic operation of a lift station is straightforward:
1. Wastewater arrives by gravity Sewage flows through the collection system by gravity and enters the lift station wet well — an underground chamber that collects and holds the incoming wastewater.
2. Float switches monitor the level Float switches or level sensors in the wet well monitor the rising wastewater level continuously.
3. Pumps activate automatically When the wastewater reaches a set level the pumps activate automatically and begin pumping the sewage uphill through a pressurized force main pipe.
4. Wastewater is discharged downstream The pumped sewage travels through the force main and discharges into a gravity sewer at a higher elevation, continuing its flow toward the treatment plant.
5. Pumps cycle on and off As the wet well level drops the pumps shut off automatically. The cycle repeats continuously as wastewater flows in.
Key Components of a Lift Station
Wet well — the underground chamber that collects incoming wastewater. Sized to provide adequate pump cycle time and emergency storage capacity.
Submersible pumps — the heart of the lift station. Most modern lift stations use submersible pumps installed directly in the wet well. Typically installed in pairs — one duty pump and one standby pump.
Force main — the pressurized pipe that carries pumped sewage from the lift station to the downstream gravity sewer. Sized for the pump flow rate and designed to prevent solids settling.
Control panel — the electrical control system that manages pump operation, monitors performance, and triggers alarms for abnormal conditions.
Valves and piping — check valves prevent backflow when pumps shut off. Isolation valves allow individual pumps to be removed for maintenance without shutting down the station.
Backup power — critical lift stations have generator backup to maintain operation during power outages. A lift station without power means a wet well that fills up and eventually overflows.
Why Lift Station Maintenance Matters
Lift stations are critical infrastructure. When a lift station fails the consequences are serious:

- Raw sewage discharge to streets, waterways, and properties

Wet well cleaning — grease, rags, and solids accumulate in the wet well over time and need to be removed regularly.
Float switch and sensor calibration — level sensing equipment needs regular verification to ensure accurate pump activation.
Control panel inspection — electrical components, alarms, and communications systems need regular inspection and testing.
Valve maintenance — check valves and isolation valves need inspection to ensure proper operation.
Bypass pumping during maintenance — any maintenance that requires taking pumps offline requires temporary bypass pumping to maintain flow through the station.
Lift Station Bypass Pumping
Whenever a lift station needs significant maintenance — pump replacement, wet well cleaning, structural repairs — bypass pumping is required to keep wastewater flowing while the station is offline.
A temporary bypass pump is installed upstream of the station, picks up the incoming flow, and pumps it directly to the force main or downstream gravity sewer, bypassing the station entirely.
Sizing the bypass pump correctly is critical — it must handle peak flow to prevent overflows during the maintenance window.
